In his work, which explores our perception of time, Leo Caillard “tries to show what we think we know in a different way, in order to challenge our assumptions and create a dialogue between eras.” In his ongoing series Wave Stone, he sculpts marble statues featuring oscillating curves at their centers, allowing familiar figures to be seen from a new perspective.
These classical characters also appear in his series Hipsters in Stone, where they are adorned with contemporary attire. “The hipster trend—with beards, long hair, and the cult of the body through fitness—shares traits with Greco-Roman statuary. Suddenly, through clothing, our perspective shifts completely, and we can’t help but see these statues in a new light, as people of today, which reconnects us with our own place in global history,” he explains.
