Our ancestors were strange, strange people.
History has a whole load of bizarre and strange things. In this piece, we’ve strung together some bizarre ways that our ancestors used to treat different diseases.
Diseases and illnesses have accompanied man since the beginning of times. A struggle for finding the right kind of cure has also been there all along. Medical history is full of interesting examples of how man struggled to find out the cures and evolved to make medicines that we use today. While some diseases were thought to be demonic interventions, others were treated with totally unhealthy herbs like tobacco. It is remarkable to see how science and technology have evolved and today we have a proper cure for almost every illness.
Some of the methods that were exercised by our ancestors were pretty dangerous too, have a look!
#1. The evolution of anesthetic drugs is very interesting throughout the history. At one point, Juniper and cocoa extracts were used as anesthetics.
The Canon used a soporific sponge as inhalational anesthesia. It was basically a sponge drowsed in products derived from psychoactive plants.
The patient would be encouraged to smell the sponge in order to inhale the aromatics and narcotics or any sedative prior to surgery. This would work as an anesthesia.
#2. Mental diseases were thought to be demonic effects
Yeah, diseases like epilepsy or schizophrenia were treated with prayers and holy water. Mental patients would be taken to the church because it was a common belief that these diseases were a result of demons.
Proper church healing sessions would be arranged for patients with mental illnesses.
Talk about the power of prayers!
#3. Bloodletting was commonly practiced by doctors.
Bloodletting is was one of the most popular medical practice in the 19th century. Bloodletting is actually withdrawing blood and other bodily fluids from the bodies of patients to cure a disease or to prevent any disease from happening.
The theory was that body fluid contained “humours” that had to be let out in order to prevent or cure diseases.
This method was pliable around 2000 years ago today.
#4 Egyptians treated patients with charms, spells, and concoctions
There were legit spells that would be used in making herbal potions.
Ancient Egyptian history is filled with numerous such examples.
#5 Trephination was used to let those demons inside peoples’ heads out
This was an extremely revolting practice, in which holes would be drilled in the skulls of mental patients.
The belief behind it was, that the hole would let out all the evil spirits that were bothering the patient.
Different scriptures and cave paintings point to the fact that Trephination was used to treat seizures, migraines, and various psychological illnesses.
#6. Tobacco smoke was actually used as a drug to treat many diseases!
More commonly used for the treatment of hernia, tobacco smoke was used to cure stomach aches, digestive disorders, and even somnolence.
Later, in the 19th century, adverse effects of tobacco smoke were discovered.
It was found that tobacco contained a harmful chemical called nicotine, which is poisonous to the human body. So, this method was abandoned.
