People Are Recreating Terrible Thrift Store Art At Home And It’s Hilarious (40 Pics)

Recreating artwork using objects in their homes has become a pastime for many creative people who are stuck in quarantine. And while we’ve seen recreations of famous works by Picasso, van Gogh, and Klimt, there’s another style of painting that is often overlooked when it comes to art recreations. I’m talking, of course, about thrift store art – a unique art form that’s rarely recreated for a good reason.

These are the types of paintings that end up in charity stores and garage sales when someone finally decides they can’t bear looking at them any longer. However, there are people out there that actually appreciate these paintings and someone even started a Facebook group called Terrible Art in Charity Shops where they share their most hilarious finds. Recently, some users started recreating some of that terrible art at home, and the results were even more hilarious than the originals – check them out in the gallery below!

In an interview with Bored Panda, Becky Gouverneur, one of the administrators of the group, said she and her friend Laura started Terrible Art in Charity Shops back in 2017. It all started when Laura posted a photo of some terrible thrift store art on her own Facebook page and got hundreds of comments. That’s when Becky suggested she start a group and the project took off.

“When lockdown began across the world, the group interactions dropped dramatically as most of the charity shops had closed. We were a bit worried about the group, which had been so active until then,” explained Becky. “Then, one day, a member called Ceri Ashton asked if she was allowed to post a ‘recreation’ of a post from the group. Matt and Ann (two of our key admins) mulled it over for a couple of hours. We are normally quite strict about what we let in as we don’t want the group to become swamped with all those kitsch statues of ladies dancing or awful cat plates….”

“The group was originally aimed at awful paintings or drawings by amateur artists (this is also something I’m really keen on as I’m an artist myself) and we try to keep true to that original vision,” continued Becky. “In the end, Matt and Ann thought ‘what the hell, only a few of them will be bothered to join in so what harm can it do?’ and the group had become so quiet during lockdown they thought it would provide some entertainment… little did they know! None of us expected the reaction we got!”

Becky said that after the initial post, the group went crazy and soon enough more and more people were joining in. She says that this was exactly what people needed to lighten their mood amidst all the chaos.

Turns out that Ceri ended up creating her own Facebook group called Recreate Artwork With Things You Find At Home and it already has over 63k members so make sure to check it out!
